If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be “from your mobile operator” and urging you to immediately switch to 5G, or asking you to reinstall your telecom application via a link sent through SMS, Telegram, or WhatsApp, be sure: this is a fraud attempt.
Both maib and the Police of the Republic of Moldova warn that this is a fraudulent scheme.
The fraudsters’ method works as follows: once you click the link and install the “updated” application, criminals gain remote control over your device and the applications on your phone. This means control over calls, SMS, banking apps, and access to initiate transfers, request loans, etc.
How do the fraudsters operate?
- They call and introduce themselves as employees of the mobile operator;
- They send fake installation links;
- They can block your phone and steal money from your accounts.
To avoid falling into the trap, maib recommends:
- do not install applications or updates received via suspicious links;
- verify the caller’s identity only through official channels.
Maib warns: no operator will ever ask you by phone to install applications.
If you have already taken this step, immediately notify the Police, the bank, and your mobile operator.
Do not install anything from unverified sources and report any suspicion right away.
