A digital bank, always in tune with its clients

Olga Pascari, Product Owner Deposit/Account & Onboarding, spoke with Pavel Zingan about these transformations, digital onboarding for the diaspora, and how maib continues to simplify the relationship between bank and client.
International number onboarding
The digital onboarding launched by maib in September 2023 marked an important step toward a fully digital bank. Initially, the process was available only for Moldovan citizens residing in the country and using local phone numbers.
“The client is at the center of all our digital solutions. That’s why we extended onboarding to Moldovans living in the European Union and the United Kingdom, allowing them to register directly in the maibank app using an international number,” explains Olga Pascari.
Since July 2025, this option has become a reality — and the results speak for themselves: over 65% of new registrations in these regions already come from international numbers.
“The success of remote onboarding isn’t just about technology — it’s about how much trust and comfort the client feels. We build every process starting from that human experience.”
Data updates — now online, in just a few minutes
The KYC (“Know Your Customer”) procedure is mandatory for all banks and involves regularly verifying and updating client data. While some banks see it as a compliance requirement, maib treats it as an opportunity to better understand its clients and personalize their experience.
“We want data updates to be seen not as a formality, but as a simple, safe, and transparent process. That’s why we’ve enabled clients to do it directly in the maibank app — no visits, no waiting. It takes just 1–2 minutes,” says Olga.
The feature has been available since December 2023, and over 300,000 clients have already updated their data online.
Whenever there’s a change — a new ID, phone number, or address — updates can be made instantly in the app. Moreover, maibank now accepts international phone numbers from the EU and the UK, making it easier for diaspora clients to stay connected.
A step toward the future of digital banking
Today, nearly 35% of maib clients update their data exclusively online, and the number keeps growing. Others still prefer visiting branches — which, as Olga says, is perfectly natural:
“Digitalization doesn’t mean removing the human touch. We offer the freedom to choose — clients decide how they want to interact with the bank. Some prefer the app, others prefer in-person visits. Both options remain equally safe and user-friendly.”
Maib’s goal is clear — to become a fully digital bank that provides a simple, personalized, and accessible experience from anywhere in the world.
“Our clients’ time is their most valuable resource. That’s why every digital process we design is meant to save time while maintaining high standards of security and transparency.”
Deposits — increasingly digital and rewarding
Beyond onboarding and data updates, deposits are undergoing the same digital transformation. Today, over 80% of maib deposits are opened online, directly in the maibank app.
“If you open a deposit via maibank, you receive a higher interest rate — for example, +0.5% for deposits in MDL. It’s our way of encouraging clients to use digital tools,” says Olga Pascari.
She personally prefers the maib classic+ deposit, which offers flexibility and competitive rates, and the maib multioptional+ deposit for more freedom in managing funds.
Olga also notes a growing interest in maib corporate bonds — a modern investment product offering fixed income and portfolio diversification.
